Precautions you should take when using trucking service

Lithium Batteries

Consignments that include Lithium Batteries are classified as dangerous goods and are required to be transported in limited quantities (LQ) under legal provisions of the ADR (European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road)

A written notice must be provided to MaltaPost in advance prior presenting Lithium Batteries and electronic components containing Lithium Batteries for delivery. The written notice shall include the weight of the individual battery (e.g. not the combined weight of battery and lap top) and the correct UN number.

There are two UN numbers that cover Lithium Ion batteries:

  • UN3480 covers the battery only (e.g. a replacement battery on its own in a box)
  • UN3481 covers the battery while contained inside another unit (e.g. the battery in a lap top).

This information should be indicated by the e-seller but in any case, MaltaPost should be advised.

Aerosols

Consignments that include Aerosols are classified as dangerous goods and are required to be transported in limited quantities (LQ) under legal provisions of the ADR (European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road).

A written notice must be provided to MaltaPost in advance prior presenting Aerosols for delivery. The written notice shall include the quantity, volume and product description and the correct number.

The UN number that covers aerosols is:

  • UN1950 class 2

This information should be indicated by the e-seller but in any case, MaltaPost should be advised.

Under maritime law, failure to declare could result in no shipment and potential unlimited fines to the sender.

Items which are officially classified as hazardous and include items which are or may become of a dangerous, inflammable, radioactive, noxious or damaging nature and items likely to harbor or encourage vermin or other pests, and valuable items may be refused transit. These items may include bullion, precious stones, bank notes or coins, bonds, negotiable instruments or securities of any kind, cigarettes, spirits, precious metal objects, precious jewelry, valuable works of art, antiques, historical artifacts and bloodstock, computers/hand held electronic products/mobile telephones (and electronic components of these), Lithium Battery, aerosols, human remains, live animals or plants.

Important Notice

The Items mentioned above should be labeled and marked in compliance with all laws, regulations and requirements which may be applicable. When sending such items, the seller must include the specific forms referred to the ADR and the IMO forms which are to be affixed to the parcel for us to be able to transport it from our hubs to Malta. It is important that you notify your supplier that he/she must complete this form because since they will be sending it to an address within the same country, it may not occur to them that this form is needed. We therefore kindly ask you to be in touch with the seller to request that he fills in this form. Dangerous items will not be shipped unless accompanied by these forms.
